The Imperial Legion
More actions
The Imperial Legion of the Caelian Empire is divided into numbered formations known simply as Legions. Each Legion maintains its own battlefield doctrine, traditions, and historical identity developed over centuries of service. While all Legions are capable of conventional warfare, most have developed specialisations based on geography, training philosophy, and historic campaigns.
In the present era the majority of the Legions remain stationed across imperial territory in a state of readiness. Following the outbreak of the current Under-War between the Kingdom of Ebonmount and the Luminos Alliance, the Imperial Senate authorised the mobilisation of the Legion system. At present, only the 4th Legion has been formally deployed to assist Ebonmount forces, while the remaining Legions remain in reserve should the conflict escalate.
1st Legion — First Children (Primus Pueri)
The First Legion is the oldest continuously serving military formation within the Empire and maintains strong symbolic ties to the Imperial Throne. Often referred to as the First Children, the Legion represents the highest standard of discipline and martial tradition among the imperial forces.
Historically stationed near Caelia itself, the First Legion serves as both a ceremonial guard formation and a strategic reserve capable of responding to threats near the imperial heartland. Its ranks are frequently composed of experienced veterans transferred from other Legions after distinguished service.
2nd Legion — Emperor's Fist (Imperitor Pugnus)
The Second Legion, known as the Emperor's Fist, is traditionally regarded as the Empire's primary assault formation. Its doctrine emphasises decisive battlefield breakthroughs, heavy offensive manoeuvres, and aggressive engagements intended to collapse enemy lines.
When the Empire commits fully to war, the Emperor's Fist is typically among the first Legions ordered into major engagements. Its reputation for relentless advance has made it one of the most feared formations among the Empire's adversaries.
3rd Legion — Heavy Helms (Gravitus Galeam)
The Heavy Helms specialise in heavy infantry warfare and defensive battlefield formations. Their soldiers are equipped with reinforced armour and trained extensively in shield wall tactics and disciplined line combat.
Throughout imperial history the Third Legion has frequently served as the immovable centre of an army's formation, anchoring battle lines while other Legions manoeuvre around them.
4th Legion — Quick Steps (Velox Gradus)
The Fourth Legion, known as the Quick Steps, is the Empire's premier rapid deployment force. Its soldiers are trained for long distance forced marches, mobile battlefield manoeuvres, and rapid reinforcement operations.
The Legion's doctrine prioritises speed, coordination, and operational flexibility. Because of this mobility, the Fourth Legion was the first to be dispatched following the outbreak of the current Under-War in Ebonmount. Elements of the Legion are presently operating alongside Ebonmount forces in an advisory and reinforcement capacity while the Empire evaluates the wider strategic situation.
5th Legion — Demon's Bane (Flagellum Daemonis)
The Fifth Legion has historically specialised in combating infernal and extraplanar threats. Known as Demon's Bane, the Legion maintains close ties with temple orders and consecrated battle clergy.
Its soldiers are trained to recognise demonic manifestations, resist possession attempts, and employ sanctified weaponry when confronting supernatural enemies. The Legion has been deployed repeatedly throughout imperial history to contain cult uprisings and planar incursions.
6th Legion — Elemental Champions (Pugiles Elementus)
The Elemental Champions maintain a strong working relationship with the Department of Royal Mages and specialise in warfare involving volatile magical environments. Their formations are structured to integrate battlefield mages capable of manipulating elemental forces such as fire, wind, stone, and storm.
The Legion is frequently deployed to regions where environmental conditions or magical instability play a significant role in combat operations.
7th Legion — Sand Snakes (Haranae Serpentes)
The Sand Snakes are a Legion adapted for warfare in arid environments and desert regions. Their soldiers are trained to survive extended operations in harsh climates with minimal logistical support.
Their tactics favour ambush, deception, and terrain exploitation. The Legion has historically operated along the Empire's southern frontiers where desert conditions make conventional campaigning difficult.
8th Legion — Mountain Men (Homines Montis)
The Mountain Men specialise in high altitude warfare and mountainous terrain operations. Many of its soldiers are recruited from frontier settlements accustomed to rugged environments.
Training within the Legion emphasises climbing, narrow pass defence, and subterranean combat, making them particularly effective in regions such as the Ebonmount ranges.
9th Legion — Sea Guards (Mare Custodes)
The Ninth Legion serves as the Empire's amphibious warfare and coastal defence formation. Known as the Sea Guards, they operate closely with the Imperial Navy and are trained for naval boarding actions, coastal fortification defence, and amphibious landings.
They are most commonly stationed along the Coastal Protectorate and other strategically important ports.
10th Legion — Wall Mortar (Murus Caemento)
The Tenth Legion functions as the Empire's primary engineering corps. Known as Wall Mortar, its soldiers are trained in siege engineering, fortification construction, and battlefield infrastructure development.
In times of peace the Legion is frequently tasked with building roads, bridges, and defensive installations throughout the Empire. During wartime they construct siege equipment and defensive fortifications to support field armies.
11th Legion — Portal Runners (Portus Cursores)
The Portal Runners specialise in magical logistics and rapid strategic movement through arcane transportation networks. Working closely with the Royal Colleges and imperial teleportation infrastructure, the Legion coordinates the movement of troops and supplies across vast distances.
This unique role allows the Empire to reinforce distant regions far more quickly than conventional travel would allow.
12th Legion — Wolfpack (Venator Lupis)
The Twelfth Legion operates using smaller, highly coordinated units rather than large conventional formations. Known as the Wolfpack, the Legion excels in irregular warfare, pursuit operations, and monster hunting.
Their soldiers are trained to operate in tight knit strike groups capable of tracking and eliminating dangerous threats across difficult terrain. Because of this flexibility the Legion is often deployed in situations where conventional military formations would be ineffective.
