The Pillars of Fate
More actions
Disgraced or disconnected acolytes of the The Matron wishing to return to her embrace must go through a rite known as The Pillars of Fate. The candidate is taken to a consecrated site within the Shadowfell, and must endure the following:
- The candidate fasts for three days.
- No warmth is permitted.
- No Shelter is provided.
- No comforting words are spoken.
On the fourth night, the Pillars manifest.
Some describe them as physical monoliths of black ice. Others as towering columns of golden thread stretching into darkness. All known accounts agree there are multiple stages.
The First Pillar: The Weight of Memory
The candidate is forced to relive pivotal failures or betrayals. Not as observer, but as every person harmed by their actions.
- They feel the fear they caused
- They experience the grief of survivors
- They witness the long consequences of their deviation
To pass, the candidate must accept responsibility fully. No excuses, no blaming fate, no self-deception. If they attempt to justify themselves, the ravens fall silent and the rite ends.
The Second Pillar: The Severing
The candidate must willingly surrender something fundamental:
- A treasured memory
- A personal ambition
- A beloved relationship
- A magical boon gained through defiance
- Even a portion of their own lifespan
The Raven Queen does not demand arbitrary loss, she demands the removal of what warped their thread.
Those who hesitate too long are judged unready and those who refuse are cast out permanently.
The Third Pillar: The Stillness
The candidate is placed in a state between life and death.
- Heartbeat slows.
- Breath fades.
- Darkness encroaches.
In this space, they are shown the moment of their true death.
Not metaphorically. Precisely. The place, the cause, the fear and the hopelessness. They are then given a choice:
- Resist and return unchanged
- Or accept the vision without fear
Only those who accept their destined end are restored. Those who try to alter it often awaken broken, haunted by fragments of what they saw. Once the rite is concluded, the memories shown fade away like morning fog, locked to the deepest part of their consciousness.
The Fourth Pillar: The Thread
The candidate is shown multiple branching futures, each one requires sacrifice and one must be chosen willingly.
The moment they choose, all others collapse. This binds them to a narrow destiny, often one of great consequence and purpose.
For Those Who Succeed
Those who pass often bear subtle marks:
- Hair bleached white
- Eyes flecked with gold
- Ravens drawn to their presence
- Breath visible in cold air even in summer
- A faint threadlike scar around the wrist or throat
For Those Who Fail
Failure does not always mean death, possible outcomes include:
- Immediate, silent death
- Loss of memory and identity
- Permanent severance from divine magic
- Becoming Fate-Touched, cursed to witness omens constantly
- Transformation into an emotionless servant of darkness
There is no way of knowing which of the outcomes will manifest.
