The Imperial Legion
More actions
The ancient armed forces of the Caelian Empire are divided into numbered formations known simply as Legions. Each Legion maintains a distinct operational doctrine, cultural identity, and historic motto. These mottos, often derived from Old Caelian dialect, reflect the specialised role each Legion traditionally fulfils within the Empire’s military structure.
While all Legions are capable of conventional warfare, most have developed particular reputations or battlefield specialisations over centuries of service.
1st Legion
First Children (Primus Pueri)
The First Legion holds the distinction of being the oldest continuous military formation in the Empire. Traditionally stationed closest to Caelia itself, the First Children serve as both ceremonial guardians and elite rapid response forces for threats near the imperial heartland.
Their soldiers are drawn from veteran ranks across the Empire and represent the highest standard of discipline within the Legion system. Many officers of other Legions begin their careers hoping one day to earn transfer into the First.
The Legion also maintains close symbolic ties to the Imperial Throne and often leads major military parades or victory processions.
2nd Legion
Emperor’s Fist (Imperitor Pugnus)
The Second Legion represents the Empire’s primary offensive striking force. Where the First Children defend the centre, the Emperor’s Fist delivers decisive blows against external threats.
Specialising in heavy assault tactics, siege breakthroughs, and aggressive battlefield manoeuvres, the Second Legion is frequently deployed when the Empire requires overwhelming military force.
Their doctrine emphasises relentless advance and disciplined brutality, making them one of the most feared formations among the Empire’s enemies.
3rd Legion
Heavy Helms (Gravitus Galeam)
The Heavy Helms are the Empire’s premier heavy infantry legion. Known for their distinctive reinforced helmets and layered armour systems, they form the immovable core of many imperial battle lines.
The Legion specialises in defensive formations, shield walls, and slow but unstoppable battlefield advances. In major conflicts they are often deployed as the central anchor of an army’s formation.
Their soldiers are trained to endure prolonged engagements and hold ground against overwhelming odds.
4th Legion
Quick Steps (Velox Gradus)
The Fourth Legion is renowned for its mobility. Trained extensively in forced marches, light cavalry support, and rapid battlefield repositioning, the Quick Steps serve as the Empire’s most flexible field formation.
Their role often includes:
- Reconnaissance
- Rapid reinforcement
- Flanking manoeuvres
- Pursuit of retreating forces
When speed determines the outcome of a campaign, the Fourth Legion is usually among the first deployed.
5th Legion
Demon’s Bane (Flagellum Daemonis)
The Fifth Legion specialises in combating extraplanar and infernal threats. Its ranks include battle clerics, consecrated weapon bearers, and soldiers trained specifically to counter demonic entities.
Throughout imperial history the Demon’s Bane have been dispatched whenever cult uprisings, planar incursions, or infernal manifestations threaten imperial territory.
Their equipment often incorporates sanctified metals, ritual engravings, and anti-possession wards.
6th Legion
Elemental Champions (Pugiles Elementus)
The Sixth Legion operates closely with the Department of Royal Mages and specialises in warfare involving elemental forces.
Their soldiers are trained to fight alongside battlefield mages capable of manipulating fire, wind, stone, and storm. They frequently serve in environments where natural forces become weapons, such as volcanic regions, unstable terrain, or magical storms.
The Legion’s formations are structured to accommodate arcane support units embedded directly within the ranks.
7th Legion
Sand Snakes (Haranae Serpentes)
The Sand Snakes specialise in desert warfare and long range patrol operations across arid environments.
Known for their adaptability and endurance, the Legion is capable of surviving extended campaigns with minimal supply support. Their tactics emphasise ambush, deception, and terrain manipulation.
They are often deployed across the Empire’s southern regions and desert frontiers.
8th Legion
Mountain Men (Homines Montis)
The Eighth Legion specialises in high altitude warfare and mountainous terrain operations.
Many of its soldiers are recruited from frontier regions where such environments are common. The Legion’s training emphasises climbing, tunnel fighting, and narrow pass defence.
They frequently operate alongside the forces of the Kingdom of Ebonmount and are among the primary imperial units currently mobilised in response to the Luminos Alliance conflict.
9th Legion
Sea Guards (Mare Custodes)
The Ninth Legion serves as the Empire’s amphibious warfare force and coastal defence legion.
Operating closely with the Imperial Navy, the Sea Guards specialise in:
- Coastal fortification defence
- Amphibious landings
- Naval boarding operations
- Island security
They are commonly stationed in the Coastal Protectorate and key imperial ports.
10th Legion
Wall Mortar (Murus Caemento)
The Tenth Legion functions as the Empire’s engineering and fortification corps.
Their soldiers are trained in construction, siege engineering, and defensive infrastructure. They build roads, fortresses, defensive walls, and siege machines across the Empire.
In times of war, the Tenth Legion is responsible for maintaining supply routes and constructing battlefield fortifications.
11th Legion
Portal Runners (Portus Cursores)
The Eleventh Legion is the Empire’s most unusual formation.
Specialising in magical logistics and rapid deployment through arcane transportation networks, the Portal Runners coordinate closely with the Royal Colleges and imperial teleportation infrastructure.
Their role allows the Empire to move soldiers and supplies across vast distances with unprecedented speed.
They are frequently used to reinforce distant fronts or respond to unexpected threats.
12th Legion
Wolfpack (Venator Lupis)
The Twelfth Legion operates primarily in small, highly coordinated strike groups.
Their doctrine emphasises:
- Hunter tactics
- Pursuit of dangerous targets
- Monster hunting
- Special operations
Often deployed in fragmented units rather than traditional formations, the Wolfpack is known for its aggressive battlefield culture and strong internal bonds between soldiers.
They are particularly effective in irregular warfare environments.
